Health Information

Q-Life is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary support team that cares for patients with advanced illness. Treatment goals emphasize quality of life. The program offers an integrated approach to the relief of suffering across the spectrum of serious illness by utilizing specialized skills of a palliative care physician, advanced registered nurse practitioner, social worker and chaplain. Ideally, services and support begin at the time of diagnosis.

Consultations are appropriate for anyone 18 and older with a serious life-limiting diagnosis, such as:

  • Chronic respiratory disease
  • Dementia
  • Cancer
  • Neurological disorders
  • Stroke

Any patient, family or Lee Memorial Health System staff may request a referral by asking s patient's primary or attending physician. The physician writes the order and states the goal or purpose of the Q-Life referral.

Q-Life strives to help patients and family members define quality of life issues, as well as:

  • Offer treatment options to reduce suffering
  • Assist with decisions and choices of agressive or comfort treatment
  • Support and educate family members
  • Provide anticipatory grief counseling

Patient, caregivers and families benefit from access to a team of experienced clinicians who specialize in:

  • Relief of pain and distressing symptoms
  • Advance directives
  • Enhancement of communications between patient, family and staff
  • Emotional and spiritual support
  • Discussions and recommendations regarding ethical decisions
  • Patient and family education
  • Grief and loss

Physicians and Lee Memorial Health System staff benefit through collaboration when:

  • Pain and debilitating symptoms are difficult to control
  • Ethical decisions are unclear
  • Complex physical, psychological and/or social suffering requires extensive evaluation and close follow up
  • Staff is supported with education in palliative symptom management
