MyChart Provides Patients Easy Access to Medical Record and InformationWhen Ruth Gerson's husband, Richard, got shingles, she had a lot of questions for the doctor many of which came to her after their scheduled appointment. Rather than calling the office or the call center, Ruth used her access to MyChart to get the answers she needed.
"MyChart offers patients secure, online access to their medical records," explains Leah Lynch, M.D., Richard and Ruth's internal medicine physician and Lee Physician Group medical director of informatics. "They can see most of their test results, view their medications and history, request refills and appointments, and send messages or questions regarding their health to their physician or health care provider."
That access proved very helpful for Ruth. "I had a lot of questions and we were able to correspond with Dr. Lynch or Mary Ellen [Demartini, advanced registered nurse practitioner] easily through MyChart," she says. "They were very prompt in their responses. It's a great feature, and it's very easy to use."
Dr. Lynch says adult children of her elderly patients also find MyChart helpful. "We have proxy access so they can check on their parent's test results or communicate with their provider," she says. Looking ahead, Lee Physician Group hopes to have a mobile phone application and add clinical content linking, which provides links to information on specific diagnoses or medications.
"These improvements will make MyChart a more convenient and valuable resource for our patients in managing their health," Dr. Lynch says. "Additionally, now that Lee Memorial Health System has Epic electronic health records in all four hospitals, we are beginning to work on an Inpatient MyChart, so patients can review a summary of recent hospitalizations, as well."
In the meantime, Ruth and Richard are appreciative of the access they have through this helpful and convenient tool. "We never thought we would need MyChart, but when Richard had shingles, it prompted us to use it," Ruth says. "Now, we can't imagine not using it."
MyChart is available through most Lee Physician Group offices, as well as Convenient Care and Florida Neurology Group. If you are interested in learning more about MyChart, speak with your Lee Physician Group office staff or visit www.LeeMemorial.org/MyChart.
"Patients who use MyChart are more engaged in their health care," Dr. Lynch says. "My patients have been very happy with it."
