Residents of the Dunbar community won't have to travel far to get medical services, now that a new healthcare practice has opened in the neighborhood. Dr. Aldith Lewis of Lee Memorial Hospital is medical director of the new, United Way Dunbar House. "It's there to reach out to the Dunbar community" she says. "That community has a high degree of chronic diseases and so the goal is to focus on preventative medicine."
Dunbar has been underserved in terms of access to healthcare. A current trend in health care is to bring services to the people. The Dunbar House accomplishes that and also teams up with United Way to deliver social services. Residents can now have a variety of medical and social needs filled without leaving the neighborhood.
"We're going to have different disease management goals including diabetes, congestive heart failure, asthma. The key is they are going to have access to chronic disease management programs." Dr. Lewis says.
Tiffanie White lives nearby and says the medical practice fills a void in her neighborhood. "I think it's a good idea. Especially for people who don't have transportation" she says, "it make's it a way they can come and use the facility."
The medical practice is available for adult care only and is located at: 3511 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. Fort Myers, Fl
